Gyppo's video jukebox...

In a feeble attempt to match the technological nous of others, I hereby present an attempt to get a video to play on here. This is the 'Song of Peace' from Tony Gatlif's 2002 film 'Swing'. I particularly recommend the bit at 3' when Gypsies gatecrash an earnest peacenik 'everyone sing together' exercise with some kick-arse swing. Sharing Tony Gatlif's biases, I thoroughly approve:

Oh, I did like the bit that cut in at 3mins... it's frustrating because I can't remember what it reminds me of...
Also noteworthy is the female vocal that follows this section...
I will practice.. I'm sure I can manage the same tone...

Just what the Middle East needs. Here are some Israelis and Palestinians, singing along without a gun or beard in sight, and in pile the Gyppoes to stir it all up again.

"You invited them!"

"No, it was you! And what sort of instrument is that?"

That be a Sinti Romani woman called (iirc) Mitzu. I believe she's singing in Sinti (the other ladies are singing in Yiddish and Arabic). I was going to offer you some help with your singing, but can't find a way of putting the sentence that doesn't sound rude...

Boyo - Nobody EVER invites us to ANYTHING. But we turns up anyway...

Nice. What film is this from, Gyppo? It is indeed Mitsou/Mitsu, real name Mónika Juhász Miczura, from Hungary. I didn't know she was of Sinti descent; it was I who made her Wikipedia site, so if you have info about this please let me know!

Gadjo - the scene is from Swing (2002).

Knowing that Mitsou is a Rom and appears singing manouche alongside Tchavo, I made the unjustified assumption she was a Sinti (Schmitt and Mandino Reinhardt, the two guitarists in the clip, are definitely Sinti). If she's Hungarian-born, she's more likely Kalderash. I can't actually tell what language she's singing in here... (I'm a Romnichal Didacoi, so what do I know?)

WV: vocop - A singing policeman? As I've said before - I always get the easy ones...

Well Scarls, I was going to say "Would you like me to show you how to position your diaphragm and tighten your throat?" but if anyone was unfamiliar with vocal technique and had a dirty mind they might have misconstrued it embarrasingly...

Oh my, I'm seeing the Bentley badge again...

WV: fastake - Indeed!

I honestly don't know what tribe she's from, Gyppo, but I've heard her sing in Hungarian, Romanian and her own Romani tongue, so maybe she can sing Sinti if she's called to do so. Seriously, I've set up a few Wikipedia websites for such performers, so if you have any interesting info I'd always be glad to hear it.
