After the striking success of my last fossil-themed song...

... behold, a new and similarly pointless, obscure oeuvre. To be sung to the tune of Desmond Dekker's "Israelites":

Driftin' on de current through a cloud of phytoplankton
So that every mouth can be fed
Ooooooooh - oooooooooh
Me graptolites

[Long pause while singer waits for audience to look up graptolites in the vain hope of understanding wtf the song is about, after which the audience leaves hurriedly through a fire exit, taking their drinks with them]

Thanks for the link Gyppo, fabulous stuff. Nobody wears clothes like that any more.

Gyppo, your lyrics are as good as good any other suggestions of wtf he was singing! I was a huge fan of Dekker and saw him in concert a couple of times in London. He does a great Louis Armstrong impersonation; how about:

I see trees of green, red roses too;
I see em fossilise, for me and for you;
And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world.

Scarlet - Indeed it is...

Dapphers - Sort of, but with less drug use (graptolites are hemichordates, and therefore the most closely related phylum to vertebrates (which includes, believe it or not. I could draw you a cladogram but I can tell you're not really interested...

Inky - thank goodness. I saw Desmond Dekker on stage in the 90s when he had toned down a lot. The early stage costumes are fabulous though.

Gadjo - maybe I should go on to explain the palaeontology behind "Louis, Louis" or "Smells like teen spirit" ["Load up your hammer - bring your hand lens/It's fun to chip at cliffs with your friends/That rock's an ammonite I know/Oh no - I dropped it on your toe..."]

Excellent, Gyppo, this theme can run and run... I've just read that Des died in 2006; I hope he was given a fitting tribute at the time.
