You mean the Nazis weren't saluting, just telling their dads they wanted a wee? So WW2 was a giant misunderstanding?
When the fake Hitler diaries came out in the early 80s I proposed that they would support the "misunderstanding" thesis as well, with a Pooterish Fuehrer being misled by the evile Dr Goebbels etc.

Inkspot - I did actually enounter a top-grade nutter on a messageboard once who swore blind that misguided German toilet-training was responsible for WWII.

I feel should point out that Guthlac was actually waving at someone by folding and unfolding his hand at the end of an outstretched arm, and the photo (taken by Mrs Byard) just happened to catch an "unfold" moment. We didn't realise exactly what she'd captured until we looked at the photos days later...
Hitler's parents probably thought he was cute at that age. More importantly, Mr Gypppo, what have you done with Mrs Pouncer? After meeting you she has disappeared! Is she locked up in your caravan?
Dapphers m'dear - I too am baffled by the mysterious disappearance of Mrs Pouncer. Her failure to e-mail me may be linked to the fact that she left the paper with my private e-mail on at my neighbour's house (whether deliberately or accidentally I could not say)...
